MLB has built it. Now the teams and fans will come.

On Thursday, the Yankees will face off against the White Sox in a regular-season game held in a stadium built next to the original "Field of Dreams" field. Eight thousand fans will be in attendance to watch the game with the signature Iowa cornfields as the backdrop behind the field.

The White Sox have all but locked up the AL Central with a 98 percent chance to win the division, according to FiveThirtyEight, but they're still hoping to chase down the Rays for the best record in the American League. The Yankees have surged after buying a pair of sluggers at the MLB trade deadline and are hoping to reach the playoffs after a disappointing start to the 2021 campaign. FiveThirtyEight currently gives them a 43 percent chance of making the playoffs.

  • Date: Thursday, Aug. 12
  • Time: 8 p.m. ET

The Field of Dreams Game between the Yankees and White Sox is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 12. It was originally set to be held in 2020 between the White Sox and the Cardinals, but due to a number of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, it was pushed back to 2021.

Fox will be providing the national television coverage of the game, with the broadcast unit set up similar to postseason games. Joe Buck will be providing play-by-play with John Smoltz in the booth providing analysis. Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci will report from the dugouts and Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Frank Thomas will also work as role reporters during the game.

Fans will have no shortage of streaming options, with the ability to watch it live on either Bally Sports, MLB.TV or fuboTV, the latter of which offers a seven-day free trial.

Where is the Field of Dreams Game?

  • Location: Dyersville, Iowa

The White Sox and Yankees will face off against one another in Dyersville, Iowa, in a ballpark built next to the original Field of Dreams diamond. The temporary stadium can hold 8,000 spectators.

The design of the park will connect both the 1919 White Sox and the film. The park is designed similar to Comiskey Park and will have windows in the outfield that show the corn field in right field. There is a path running through the cornfield that connects the "Field of Dreams" field with MLB's stadium for the game.

For those wondering why the game will not be played on the actual field from the movie, the reason is simple: it doesn't fit MLB guidelines. According to MLB.com, it would not fit typical MLB dimensions and there would be too many baseballs getting lost in the cornfields.

The Field of Dreams website lists the infield as having MLB regulation size basepaths and mound-to-plate distances, but the outfield is 300 feet to left, 350 feet to center and 315 feet to right. By comparison, Fenway Park, the oldest stadium in baseball, is 310 feet to left — albeit, with the Green Monster — and 302 feet to right with a 390-foot distance between true center and home plate.

If every baseball that went unfielded rolled into the corn for a ground-rule double or simply flew out for a home run, the ERAs for White Sox starter Lance Lynn and Yankees starter Andrew Heaney — along with several relievers — would certainly be sky-rocketing during the game.

Field of Dreams Game uniforms

The Yankees might not have played a central role in the film the way the White Sox did, but their jerseys still get the throwback treatment.

When New York takes the field, its players will be wearing gray uniforms with "New York" stretched in an arc across the chest in navy blue lettering without the white outline that is common on today's jerseys. The numbers on the back are thinner than the modern-day uniform.

The hats will have a thicker white "NY" in white font on a gray background that reflects the style of the hat back in 1919.

The White Sox will be wearing nearly the same uniforms as those worn by Chicago in 1919, which was the style depicted in the film.

Chicago will don white jerseys with navy blue pinstripes and the large S with O and X in each curve of the letter. As the hats of the time period were designed, there is no logo on the cap itself. Instead, it will just be a white hat with navy blue pinstripes.

The only discrepancy between the uniforms of 1919 and those in 2021 will be the Nike swoosh symbol on the right shoulder. Nike was founded in 1964, so the uniforms certainly did not feature any of their logos back in 1919.
