Don Mattingly says MLB issues with hitting need fixing, game sometimes 'unwatchable' image

Don Mattingly doesn't like what he's seen so far this season.

The Marlins manager didn't mince words after Thursday's game when talking with reporters, saying that there are problems within MLB with the rise in strikeouts and all the no-hitters being thrown this season.

In a video of the news conference shared by writer Craig Mish, Mattingly said that while it's great for the team and the pitcher throwing the no-hitter, there are issues in the game that need to be addressed and that it will take some time to fix.

"Now we're at a point where I think it gets so much more attention because it's just a game that sometimes is unwatchable," Mattingly said. "You know, you see guys you talk to and they don't even watch the games because there's nothing that goes on in them."

Mattingly certainly knows a thing or two about hitting. The former Yankees All-Star and 1985 AL MVP has a batting crown to his name and finished his career with batting average of .307 and strikeout rate of 5.8 percent.

During his 14-year career, his Yankees were never no-hit.

As a manager with the Dodgers, Mattingly watched from the dugout as Josh Beckett and Clayton Kershaw pitched no-hitters in 2014. Edinson Volquez threw a no-hitter for the Marlins in 2017 during Mattingly's season at the helm of Miami's team.
