Chris Davis breaks MLB record for at-bats without a hit image

Chris Davis broke an MLB record for futility Monday night.

The Orioles first baseman went hitless in his first three at-bats against the Athletics and is now 0-for-47 at the plate dating back to September 14, 2018. He's hitless in 26 at-bats this season.

With that, Davis broke the record for consecutive hitless at-bats by a non-pitcher. Eugenio Velez also went hitless in 46 straight at-bats with the Giants and Dodgers from 2010-11.

Davis lined out to right in his first at-bat off Athletics starter Marco Estrada, then lined out to left in the third inning and drew applause from sympathetic fans at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Despite the two hard-hit balls, he had nothing to show for it. The record-breaking fly out went to left field.

Davis signed a seven-year, $161-million contract with Baltimore after the 2015 season. In the first three seasons of that deal, Davis hit .199 with a .296 on-base percentage and .391 slugging percentage.
