It makes sense why the Blue Jays wear blue. I mean, it's in the team's name of course.

But red uniforms? That's a bit out of left field.

Fans have noticed that every so often, the Blue Jays break out red tops with white bottoms, straying away from the typical color scheme of the organization.

Believe it or not, these jerseys aren't new to the club. In fact, red uniforms have been around in some capacity with the Blue Jays since before the turn of the century.

The Sporting News explains why the Blue Jays wear red jerseys:

Why do the Blue Jays wear red jerseys?

The first time the Blue Jays wore red jerseys was back in 1996. Over the years, the club would bring out the red in honor of Canada Day or to celebrate Baseball Canada.

The specific red uniforms that Toronto dons now debuted in 2017. With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary as a country, the Blue Jays decided to wear red uniforms for select games during the season, including a majority of the Sunday home games.

In 2022, the club randomly decided to bring back the red jerseys, wearing them sporadically throughout the season. The red alternatives have also made appearances in 2023.

Simply put, the red is to show off the Blue Jays' pride in being Canada's only professional baseball team in the MLB.

Blue Jays red jerseys curse

Some fans don't like the jersey simply due to how different it is from the normal setup for the Blue Jays. Others don't like what follows once the red jerseys make their way onto the field.

While fans may have enjoyed looking at the red uniforms, the on-field product while boasting them has left a sour taste in the mouths of the Toronto faithful.

The Blue Jays have struggled immensely in the red attire since the club debuted the jerseys in 2017. Toronto owns a record of 4-10 while wearing the alternates, and some of the defeats have been flat-out blowouts, including losses of 15-1, 19-1 and 11-4.

It has led some fans to believe that the red jerseys are cursed and that the Blue Jays are doomed whenever they decide to wear the kits.

Blue Jays City Connect jerseys

Fans may have thought that the red uniforms worn by the Blue Jays were their City Connect jerseys. That isn't the case.

While the City Connect alternative jerseys do typically sport vibrant color schemes that can occasionally stray away from the norm, Toronto has not unveiled its City Connect uniforms yet.

Seven teams got the unique uniforms in 2021, seven in 2022 and seven in 2023, but the Blue Jays are not a part of the 21 clubs to release their alternate uniforms yet.

Toronto is expected to get them in 2024.
