It's a must-win situation for the Blue Jays as the they enter Game 2 of their American League Wild Card Series against the Mariners down 1-0 in the best-of-three.
The fans in Rogers Centre had little to be excited about Friday as Seattle took early control of the game and maintained it throughout, eventually shutting out Toronto 4-0. Mariners starter Luis Castillo was excellent: he allowed six hits and no walks over 7 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.
Alek Manoah had an uncharacteristic start for Toronto. He allowed three runs in the first inning on a Eugenio Suarez double and a Cal Raleigh two-run homer. He finished the day going 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, a walk and four strikeouts.
The team now turns to Kevin Gausman, who is anticipated to start Game 2. He has been dealing with an injury to his right middle finger but is expected to be on the mound opposing Robbie Ray. The Mariners left-hander pitched for two seasons with the Blue Jays, winning the AL Cy Young award in 2021. It is the first time Ray will be pitching in Toronto since leaving as a free agent.
