He joins Larry Costello as the only championship coach in franchise history and also helped Milwaukee break a 17-year streak of failing to get beyond the first round in the postseason.
“The players make the success happen on and off the court. We have the best players and to them I am grateful," said Budenholzer via a team release.
"They’ve grown and we’ve grown together during the last three seasons. We’ve had success along the way, finishing with an NBA Championship this season. The assistant coaches’ efforts and contributions to our success has been so vital also. Each of them individually are so important to me, and collectively they make so much good happen for me and our players.
"We all can’t wait to get back to work and face the great challenge of competing again for an NBA Championship. Again, being a part of the Bucks organization is very special. Let’s keep getting better and building great teams and doing great work on and off the court. Let’s go Bucks!!!”
Team | W/L | Winning % |
Atlanta Hawks (2013-14/18) | 213-197 | 52.0 |
Milwaukee Bucks (2018-19-Current) | 162-65 | 71.1 |
After spending 17 years as an assistant in San Antonio, Budenholzer spent five years with the Atlanta Hawks, winning the first of his two Coach of the Year awards in 2015. He then joined the Bucks to begin the 2019 season.
Budenholzer had come under heavy scutiny leading into the postseason, with the Bucks failing to capitlise on holding the league's best record in 2019 and 2020. Despite falling behind 2-0 in both the Conference Semi Finals and NBA Finals, the Bucks recovered and Budenholzer will be manning the sidelines for years to come.
