Officials within the Mexican Football Federation have declined to comment on two national team players being implicated in the Paradise Papers leak.
The papers are a large leak of documents pertaining to offshore investments which the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists is examining how politicians and famous figures use tax havens. Mexican investigative magazine Proceso reported Thursday that Porto players Diego Reyes and Hector Herrera both are named in the documents.
Shortly after arriving in Portugal, each player created two companies based in Malta, according to the report, which has no Tax Information Agreement with Mexico. Proceso says Herrera incorporated companies named Herrera Holdings Limited and Herrera Management Limited in the island nation on Feb. 7, 2014, while Reyes incorporated Nemo Limited and Pelon Investments Limited in June of 2015.
"No comment. It’s a personal topic, and for their clubs," Mexico director of national teams Dennis te Kloese told La Aficion .
Both players started Mexico's friendly match Friday in Belgium and look set to play against Poland on Monday before returning to Portugal.
