Sanjoy Sen, Mohun Bagan's chief coach underwent a successful open heart cardiac bypass surgery in a private hospital in Kolkata, earlier on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old who complained of severe chest pain on the previous day was immediately hospitalized well into Tuesday night when Dr. Kunal Sarkar, a renowned cardiac surgeon of Medica Superspeciality Hospital, situated in the southern suburb of the city decided to operate on him without much haste.

The 2015 I-League winner with the Mariners went under the knife in a seven-hour long surgery and was shifted to the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) only late in the evening.

"Dr. Sarkar performed three grafts on his blocked coronary arteries and he is much stable now and has been responding to the surgery pretty well. Mr. Sen has been shifted the ITU and is under ventilation, a routine procedure. We will keep him under observation for now and one can expect him to be shifted to the general ward in around three-four days time", a member of the hospital staff told Goal.

While Mohun Bagan played out a 1-1 draw against NBP Rainbow AC in a Calcutta Football League (CFL) fixture on the same evening, a host of club officials from Mohun Bagan were present during the entire duration of the surgery.

The Green and Maroon's Finance Secretary Debashish Dutta confirmed, "The operation was successful and he has been shifted the ITU. I was present the whole time in the hospital. We hope he recovers soon."

With his assistant Shankarlal Chakraborty stationed at the helm of affairs for the local CFL, Sen was expected to resume his duties as full-time coach from 2nd October onwards, in preparation for the forthcoming season of the I-League.

However, Sen's return to the field at the very beginning of next month is unlikely as the doctors recommend at least four weeks of postoperative rest.
