La Liga World Tournament: Girona announce their arrival in style, hammer Melbourne City 6-0 image

Girona marked their arrival in India with a dominant 6-0 win over Melbourne City in the second game of the La Liga tournament at Kochi's JLN Stadium on Friday.

Cristian Portugues' brace (11', 17') and Antonio Lozano's (25') goal in the first half forced Melbourne City to further leave space in behind in the second half as they tried to claw back into the game. Juan Pedro (51'), Yhoan Many (68') and Pedro Porro (90+1') completed the rout in the second half as Melbourne City were made to look like a completely different side from the one that humbled Kerala Blasters 6-0 on Tuesday.

Although both teams seemed content with a slow start to the game, an unwise pass out from the back by the City defence into the feet of Luke Brattan sent the alarm bells ringing in the 11th minute. The pass was intercepted and played to Cristian Portigues who slotted neatly past the goalkeeper to open the scoring for Girona.

A lethal counter set up Gironistes ' second six minutes later. Aleix Garcia marauded forward into space on the left flank and supplied Portugues who scored his second goal of the night with a deft touch past the experienced Eugene Galekovic.

A clever switch of play to the right flank yielded Girona their third goal. Carabello's ball across the face of the goal missed the gloves of Galekovic and was tapped into the net by Lozano at the far post.

There was no stopping the Spanish side even after the break as Garcia's corner was headed into the net in the 51st minute by Juan Pedro. Substitutes were brought onto the centre stage when Yhoan Many broke forward on the counter, entered the box and tested Bouzanis with a firm hit that sneaked into the goal in between the goalkeeper's gloves.

Melbourne City's humbling was completed in added time when Many swung in a looping cross which was easily headed into the net by Pedro Porro. The final scoreline read 6-0, the same margin that shamed Kerala Blasters two days ago.

Girona will take on Kerala Blasters at the same venue on July 28.
