Canada continues its quest for a third consecutive World Juniors championship when it takes on Latvia on Wednesday afternoon.
It’s a new-look Canadian squad this year, featuring just one returning player from last year’s roster in forward Owen Beck, a 2022 second-round pick of the Montreal Canadians. But the roster is nonetheless rife with talent, touting ten first-round NHL draft picks and the presumptive first-overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, Boston University standout Macklin Celebrini.
Latvia is hoping to top its performance at last year’s tournament when it avoided relegation and finished in ninth place. In a difficult Group A, Latvia will rely on a trio of talented 19-year-olds: winger Sandis Vilmanis (Florida Panthers), center Dans Locmelis (Boston Bruins) and Niks Fenenko.
Latvia is playing in the World Juniors for a third consecutive season for the first time in the country's history.
