Call it a Hail Mary. Tony Romo isn't likely to make the cut at the 2019 AT&T Byron Nelson, but it's always fun to watch him hit the links.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned CBS analyst is a scratch golfer, and he's begun dabbling in the PGA Tour in retirement. This weekend, he'll make his third career Tour start near his old Sunday stomping grounds at the Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, where Romo is a member playing on a sponsor's exemption.

Romo, 39, has played twice on sponsor's exemptions: the Corales Puntacana Golf & Resort Championship in the Dominican Republic the last two years. But he's mainly a celebrity draw to drum up interest in a stopgap tournament with the PGA Championship looming next weekend.

So we'll be clear: Romo is the longest of longshots. The Westgate sportsbook gave him 10,000-1 odds to win the tournament, and most other oddsmakers are in the same ballpark.

But, hey, the Byron Nelson field is not as strong this year with Tiger Woods and most of the world's best focused on Bethpage. Romo will have a shot to showcase his stuff and, if his game is on, possibly challenge for tee times Saturday and Sunday.

Tony Romo's golf score: Will he make the cut at 2019 AT&T Byron Nelson?

  • Tony Romo's score: 8 over (T148th)
  • Projected cut line: 80 players at 2 under or better (T55th position)

The 156-player field at the 2019 AT&T Byron Nelson includes only three of the world's top 25 golfers. Last year's cut line was 4-under par, eliminating 80 golfers from the field. Using that as a barometer, Romo would need to outplay roughly half of the touring PGA pros to reach Saturday.

Romo has missed the cut at both of his previous PGA Tour starts, shooting 15 over both times, so don't get your hopes up.
