It wasn't classic Tiger Woods, but it also wasn't a round over which he needed to hang his head. A ho-hum, 1-under 70 from Woods in Round 1 of the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach was far from his best performance of the year, but it'll keep him in the conversation for his 16th major victory as he prepares for an early morning Round 2 start.
In contrast to his previous three tournaments this year where he struggled off the tee, Woods was consistently close to or in the fairway for all but a few holes. His iron play, for seemingly the first time this year, was his kryptonite as he struggled to find the greens on many of his approach shots.

Woods frequently found himself in routine two-putt situations, leading to many easy pars. Woods parred his final 11 holes of the round, including a putt of just over 30 feet to save par on 14.
The only nightmare hole for Woods was the par-3 fifth hole where he set himself up for trouble with an awful tee shot that went behind even the spectators. The double bogey was the lone blemish on his Round 1 scorecard.
Woods tees off with Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth at 11:24 a.m. ET on Friday. Rose finished the day with a 6-under 65 to put himself atop the leaderboard.

Hole 18, Par 5, 543 yards
Ending the day on a great note, as he crushes the tee shot. Approach shot finds the left greenside bunker, and it's not exactly the best lie. Shot from the bunker does find the green, but over 40 feet from the hole. A routine two-putt ends the day.
Hole 17, Par 3, 208 yards
Tee shot on the short hole is really short and finds a bunker. A great bunker shot, however, puts him just four feet from the hole. Makes the putt for par. Just one hole between Woods and an average first day.
Hole 16, Par 4, 403 yards
Decent tee and approach shot puts him about 35 feet from the hole. Nothing too aggressive from Woods on the birdie attempt. Appears content to stay red on Day 1. Two-putts for par.
Hole 15, Par 4, 397 yards
A fortunate bounce off the tee lands Woods barely on the edge of the first cut. Approach shot finds the green and rolls back just to the very front. A birdie attempt from 60 feet is fantastic and ends just a foot from the hole. As has been the theme for today, another short putt for par.
Hole 14, Par 5, 580 yards
One of two remaining par-5s today, and Woods smokes a great tee shot to the left of the fairway. Approach shot finds the bunker in front of the green, but all in all, not too bad of shape. Takes way too big of a swing out of the bunker and sends it way over the green. Fourth shot puts him 30 feet from the hole to save par. Woods buries the 30-foot putt. Fist pump ensues.

Hole 13, Par 4, 445 yards
Just his second poor tee shot of the day, but this one is really bad and really right. A pretty good approach shot about 20 feet short of the green might be enough for him to save par.
Third shot rolls just inches past the pin for a very manageable par putt.
Hole 12, Par 3, 202 yards
Tee shot hits the green but rolls off the back just between the first and second cut. The attempt at birdie is a little light and curls off left in front of the hole, about two feet short. It's another short putt for par.
Hole 11, Par 4, 390 yards
Another good tee shot is followed by another poor approach shot. For the first time today, Woods has to navigate out of a bunker. The chip from the bunker is a gem as it hits the pin. Par.
Hole 10, Par 4, 495 yards
For all the struggles Woods has had off the tee this year, he's killing it today. Approach shot with an iron lands just short of the green. Not quite enough mustard on the chip leaves him a couple feet in front of the hole. Another hole, another par.
Hole 9, Par 4, 526 yards
Third straight excellent tee shot puts him smack in the fairway yet again. His approach shot is not nearly as great. It's way short of the green, in fact. A decent chip, however, sets him up for another par. At the turn he's 1 under.
Hole 8, Par 4, 428 yards
Lands a great tee shot dead in the center of the fairway. Approach shot lands him on the back of the green. Missed the chance at birdie way below the hole but still gets par.
Hole 7, Par 3, 109 yards
Tee shot lands about a foot from the pin but quickly rolls back around 25 feet, setting up a long putt for birdie. Woods sinks the tough putt.

Hole 6, Par 5, 523 yards
Drive hangs a little left off the tee but rolls nicely just into the first cut. Approach shot is just a little short and left of the green, but overall in good shape to pick up a stroke. Third shot rolls just past the cup. Woods converts for an easy birdie.
Hole 5, Par 3, 195 yards
Yikes. By far the worst shot of the day off the tee. It's way left. Chipped out into a really thick rough near a bunker. Third shot puts him about 12 feet from the hole for a difficult bogey attempt. The putt is about a foot shot. It's a double bogey.
Hole 4, Par 4, 331 yards
Pretty standard shot off the tee with an iron lands him on the fairway right next to Spieth and Rose. The approach shot is a beauty as it rolls back about five feet from the hole. Woods sinks it for an easy birdie.
Hole 3, Par 4, 404 yards
Lands a beautiful wood shot off the tee that merits a club twirl. Approach shot just lands in the fringe. He crushed the birdie attempt about nine feet past the hole, setting up a difficult putt for par, but he made it look easy as he settled for his third straight par to open the tournament.

Hole 2, Par 4, 516 yards
Tee shot is left and bounces into the second-cut rough. His only option is to chop it back in the fairway. Lands a decent wedge shot about 20 feet from the hole that he eventually sinks for another par. Decent recovery from a poor tee shot.
Hole 1, Par 4, 380 yards
Tiger is the only one in his group to find the fairway off the tee. Landd his approach shot about 16 feet from the hole. His birdie shot literally could not have come any closer to dropping. It'll be par, but Tiger has to be upset with how close that was.
