Tiger Woods' score: Round 1 results, highlights from 2019 PGA Championship image

Tiger Woods' first round of the PGA Championship unfolded much in the same way the past few years of his career have: like a roller coaster ride.

Shaky putting from Woods in his first event in 32 days left him with a 2-over 72, nine shots back of leader and playing partner Brooks Koepka as he walked off the course on Thursday. Woods opened the round with a double bogey, only the fourth time such he's opened a major in such fashion. Struggles on the back nine (he started at 10th hole) continued as he double bogeyed again before the turn.

Things looked more promising on the front nine as Woods followed up two successive birdies with an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole to send him near the top of leaderboard. His surge quickly ended when he bogeyed the next hole and two of his final three.

From tee to green, Woods was strong, but his putting left him hanging. Woods had four three-putts and four misses from under 9 feet. He has yet to break 70 in an opening round this season, with a 72 being his worst score to date.

(breakdown in reverse chronological order)

Hole 9, Par 4, 460 yards

Approach shot puts him 25 feet from the hole. Another two-putt sends Tiger to the clubhouse with an up-and-down 2-over 72. He's nine back of Koepka (-7).

Hole 8, Par 3, 210 yards

Following his first putt that put him within 9 feet of the hole, Tiger ends up three-putting for the fourth time today. A back nine that started so well is now three bogeys on the last four holes.

Hole 7, Par 4, 524 yards

Misses a 6-foot putt for par. Has to settle for his second bogey in the last three holes.

Hole 6, Par 4, 408 yards

An awful drive fails to find the fairway, but a great approach shot sets up a two-putt for par.

Hole 5, Par 4, 478 yards

First putt is a little heavy, rolling past the hole. Missed the 5-foot putt for par. Chalk it up as a bogey.

Hole 4, Par 5, 517 yards

Just like that, Tiger is on the prowl. Drains a 31-ft putt for his first eagle of the day. He's two back of Brooks Koepka (-5).

Hole 3, Par 3, 230 yards

Tee shot lands just 10 feet from the hole, but misses the potential third-straight birdie. Par it is.

Hole 2, Par 4, 389 yards

Lands the approach just 3 feet from the hole. Back-to-back birdies.

Hole 1, Par 4, 430 yards

Tee shot landed under a tree, but recovered well. Nails a birdie putt.

Hole 18, Par 4, 411 yards

All is not lost. Tiger recovers nicely with a good approach shot 20 feet from the hole and makes par. At the turn, Tiger has two double-bogeys and one birdie.

Hole 17, Par 3, 207 yards

Yikes. Tee shot lands in a bunker. Blasts the next shot way past the hole and misses the long par. Misses to save a bogey ... another double-bogey.

Hole 16, Par 4, 490 yards

Rough start with a drive that ends too far left. Tiger somehow nearly saves it by almost holing his third shot. He somehow salvages a par.

Hole 15, Par 4, 484 yards

Following a great drive, a beautiful approach shot about 16 feet from the hole sets Woods up for his first real attempt at a birdie today. Sinks it for birdie.

Hole 14, Par 3, 161 yards

A little short on the tee shot, but still finds the green. Two-putts it for another par.

Hole 13, Par 5, 608 yards

Tee shot lands dead center of the fairway. Wedge shot jumps off the green into the thick, but he's able to chip it out for an easy par.

Hole 12, Par 4, 515 yards

Another good tee shot that sets him up to land on the green with his second. Nearly gets the birdie, but settles for the tap-in for par.

Hole 11, Par 4, 435 yards

Second shot lands right on the middle of the green. Just misses a long birdie putt, but saves par.

Hole 10, Par 4, 502 yards

Third shot out of the rough rolls over the green. Missed a four-foot putt to save bogey. Not a great start to the PGA Championship.
