Tiger Woods final score, results, highlights from strong Round 1 at the Masters image

Tiger Woods wasn't perfect in the first round of the 2020 Masters but was still good for a score of 4-under 68 — just three shots behind leader Paul Casey.

Tiger started the round with three straight pars before sinking birdies on the 13th, 15th and 16th holes on the back nine. It looked as if he would storm to the top of the leaderboard after getting another birdie on Hole 1, but he finished the round with eight straight pars. While it certainly wasn't ideal, Tiger had this to say of his game afterward: "I put a lot of it together. It was good all around."

Tiger, who finished tied for fourth after his Round 1, is in great position to make the Masters' notoriously stringent cuts and challenge for his second straight Masters. What's more: Thursday not only tied Tiger's opening score at the Masters, but also was his first bogey-free round of golf there since 2008. It was his first bogey-free round of any major since the 2009 PGA championship. In all, Tiger hit 15 of 18 greens and 10 of 14 fairways.

Hole 9, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: Par. And with that, Tiger is bogey-free one round through the Masters — his first since 2008.

Shot 3: Not enough break on it. Scoots by an inch to the left and makes it another tap-in par.

Shot 2: Tiger's approach finally lands him with a makeable putt for birdie: looking at 6, 7 feet.

Shot 1: And Tiger hits the fairway again. Last chance at a final birdie here in Round 1.

Hole 8, Par 5 (par):

Shot 5: Par it is.

Shot 4: Another missed opportunity; Tiger's long birdie attempt stops about 3 feet shy, and that's what he'll have to make for par.

Shot 3: Tiger's not happy there. He's on the green but his ball rolls back again for a 30ish-foot birdie attempt. His approach game has been killing him these last several holes.

Shot 2: Tiger hits a low stinger, setting himself up for an approach shot at eagle.

Shot 1: Another tee grab for Tiger. Let's see if he can make good on the last par-5 hole of the day.

Hole 7, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: And there's another straight-on par.

Shot 3: Tiger can't get it to land but he has a manageable 2-footer to save par.

Shot 2: He goes with a pitching wedge on the 161-yard approach; it lands about 10 feet past the whole but spins too much, catches the slope and rolls all the way down to the front-right of the green.

Shot 1: Tiger loves it again, and his drive is safely in the center of the fairway.

Hole 6, Par 3 (par):

Shot 3: Par.

Shot 2: Another near miss, another tap-in par.

Shot 1: Good tee shot lands Tiger another GIR, and he has a 12-footer for birdie here.

Hole 5, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: And he saves it for par — his first since 2018 on this hole after bogeying here every hole in 2019.

Shot 3: Tiger actually has a pretty decent stance for the long putt, which overshoots its mark by about 3 feet. He'll have that to save par.

Shot 2: The approach — about 216 yards from the hole — overshoots the green, lands in the fringe and is about an inch from falling into the sand trap. Tiger smiles and shakes his head.

Shot 1: Tiger slices the drive right, seemingly for better position to attack the hole. He's on the fairway.

Hole 4, Par 3 (par):

Shot 3: Tiger gets the foot-long par. A couple of near-misses is all that separates Tiger from a good start from the top of the leaderboard.

Shot 2: Tiger gets a straight-line shot at the hole, but he misses it just left.

Shot 1: Another nice tee shot from Tiger, who lands on the green level with the pin about 10 feet from pay dirt.

Hole 3, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: Par.

Shot 3: Ooh, Tiger nearly grazed the edge on his attempt but just missed right and scoots forward a half-foot. He'll have a tap-in par here.

Shot 2: Tiger uses the pitching wedge for the 135-yard approach. The ball lands on the green about a foot short of the hole but rolls back 6 or 7 yards to the edge. That's what he has for birdie.

Shot 1: Tiger with the iron off the tee, down the left side.

Hole 2, Par 5 (par):

Shot 5: Par it is.

Shot 4: Tiger's putt lands about a foot short of birdie. Tough break but he'll have to settle for the par attempt.

Shot 3: Woof, Tiger blasts it out of the bunker but gets no roll; he'll have a 15-, 20-footer uphill for birdie.

Shot 2: Tiger's in the bunker behind the green and will have a long bunker shot for eagle.

Shot 1: Tiger loves it. He smokes a stinger down the fairway and starts packing up before the shot lands.

Hole 1, Par 4 (birdie):

Shot 3: Beautiful. He sinks a birdie that was true the entire way. That puts him just one shot off the lead.

With the fist pump:

Shot 2: Another GIR flops about 20 feet short of a birdie attempt.

Shot 1: Tiger's 266-yard drive lands safely in the center of the fairway short and left of the bunker. He has 175 yards left to the hole.

Hole 18, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: And he hits it for par. On to the front nine.

Shot 3: Tiger gets a nice cut on the birdie attempt but leaves it a little long. He'll have a 2-footer for par on the final hole of the back nine.

Shot 2: Tiger hooks his approach shot, and it lands on the backside of the green in the fringe. Looking at another long up-and-down.

Shot 1: Tiger's drive hooks right; that said, it manages to stay on the fairway.

Hole 17, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: Par.

Shot 3: The birdie attempt looks true the entire way through but pulls up just short. Tiger will take the tap-in par.

Shot 2: A nice approach lands a GIR, and Tiger has about 20 feet for a third consecutive birdie.

Shot 1: Tiger's drive off the tee veers a little right and lands right on the line of the fairway and fringe. That's a 280-yard drive that leaves about 171 yards to the hole.

Hole 16, Par 3 (birdie):

Shot 2: Birdie it is.

Shot 1: Absolutely beautiful. He lands on the green where the ball rolls back to less than a foot for birdie. He's cooking with gas now.

Hole 15, Par 5 (birdie):

Shot 4: And he sinks it! The 10-footer proves no problem for Tiger who birdies both of the back-nine par-5s.

Shot 3: Didn't get enough of it there on the pitch, and will have a 12-footer for birdie.

Shot 2: He overshoots the approach, landing on the left-backside of the fringe where it rolls further from the pin at the front-right of the green. He's got some work to do for an up-and-down birdie here.

Shot 1: Tiger likes that drive; didn't even bother watching where it landed after he smoked it.

Hole 14, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: Par.

Shot 3: Another beautiful putt hooks just right and short of the hole. Could have been the shot of the tournament thus far but Tiger will settle instead for a tap-in par.

Shot 2: Tiger hits the GIR, but it's on far right; he has another 54-foot lag putt to make birdie on the front-left pin.

Shot 1: And there's Tiger's first bad drive of the day. It veers left and it looks like he could have some tree trouble. ... Actually, he looks to have missed them after the 260-yard drive.

Hole 13, Par 5 (birdie):

Shot 4: And he sinks it for birdie! Close call but it all works out. On to the 14th.

Shot 3: Nice lag putt lands a left a couple of feet from the hole. This is a have-to-make-it birdie from this distance.

Shot 2: Oh, Tiger knows he lucked out there. Didn't get quite what he wanted on the approach shot, but still enough to land on the front of the green with a couple of feet to spare from the water hazard. He has a lag putt upcoming for eagle, and that's way better than the alternative.

Shot 1: Decent drive lands 296 yards, just in the rough. No harm on the par-5.

Hole 12, Par 3 (par):

Shot 3: Par.

Shot 2: Another putt that lands just short, and Tiger's a lot less happy with that one. It'll be a walk-in par but that's a missed opportunity.

Shot 1: Tiger's tee lands on the front of the green and rolls harmlessly back a foot toward the fringe. He'll have a very makeable look at birdie here, about 12 feet.

Hole 11, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: Par.

Shot 3: A beautiful putt lands just short of the hole, and that'll be in a walk-in par.

Shot 2: And there's Tiger's first green in regulation of the day. Still has to lag putt to get to the pin: about 33 feet.

Shot 1: This drive lands just right of the fairway, after about 290 yards. Not the worst, but he could have some tree trouble.

Hole 10, Par 4 (par):

Shot 4: Par. And Tiger's on the board. He'll kick himself for flubbing an early birdie opportunity but going even to start isn't the worst. On to Hole 2.

Shot 3: No harm, no foul. Tiger pitches it across the green and leaves himself 2 or 3 feet uphill for a par.

Shot 2: Tiger didn't like his approach at all. He flubs a perfect starting spot on the center of the green to attack the front-right pin. It hooks left toward the trees on the fringe, however. He'll have some work — about 27 yards — for an up-and-down par to start.

Shot 1: Tiger's first drive of the day is just over the trees and on the green. He hits it about 295 yards, leaving 178 left to the hole. Great start.

10:56 p.m.: About that time.
