TGL standings: Updated playoff scenarios as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy fight for final spot in indoor golf league image

The chase for the playoffs in the brand new TGL, which pits PGA Tour players against one another in team competition and blends simulator golf with real indoor putting greens, came down to the final week of the regular season. Teams led by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Rickie Fowler were battling for the final spot in the postseason.

Fowler's New York Golf Club entered the final week of the regular season in prime position to secure the fourth and final playoff berth. Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club needed a win and a loss by New York to McIlroy's Boston Common Golf to keep playing this season.

Here is an updated playoff picture and all the playoff-clinching scenarios in TGL.

Will Tiger Woods make the TGL playoffs?

Tiger Woods cannot make the TGL playoffs. It was still up for grabs in the regular season's final week, but the Jupiter team needed Boston Common to beat New York and also to beat Atlanta on Tuesday.

Tiger Woods playoff scenarios

Woods' playoff scenarios were as follows:

  • Win vs Atlanta AND New York loss to Boston
  • OTL vs Atlanta AND New York loss vs Boston -AND- more holes won than New York

Both scenarios needed New York to lose to Boston, but they won. Woods and Jupiter are eliminated from playoff contention.

Will Rory McIlroy make the TGL playoffs?

Rory McIlroy cannot make the TGL playoffs.

Boston needed a win against New York where Boston finished the regular season with more total holes than New York, and a Jupiter loss to Atlanta. The Boston team includes McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama.

With the season on the line, Boston lost to New York so they are eliminated from playoff contention no matter what happens between Jupiter and Atlanta on Tuesday.

Rory McIlroy playoff scenarios

McIlroy's playoff scenarios were as follows:

  • Win vs New York AND Jupiter loss vs Atlanta AND more holes won than New York
  • Win vs New York AND Jupiter OTL vs Atlanta AND more holes won than New York -OR-Jupiter

With both scenarios needing a win, the loss means that McIlroy and Boston are both eliminated from playoff contention.

Will Rickie Fowler make the TGL playoffs?

Rickie Fowler had the simplest path to the TGL playoffs, as New York controlled its own fate to the postseason.

NYCG was in fourth place, and all it had to do was win its final match against Boston to guarantee itself the final playoff spot. The New York team includes Fowler, Xander Schauffle, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Cam Young. New York won 10-6 and clinched the fourth seed in the playoffs.

Rickie Fowler playoff scenarios

Fowler's playoff scenarios were as follows:

  • Win vs Boston
  • OTL vs Boston -AND- Jupiter loss to Atlanta
  • Loss vs Boston -AND- Jupiter loss or OTL vs Atlanta -AND- more holes won than Boston and Jupiter

New York didn't leave it up to chance and clinched its playoff spot with a win over Boston.

How do the TGL playoffs work?

The top four teams, based on points, reach the TGL playoffs, with holes won being the first tiebreaker.

The No. 1 seed faces the No. 4 seed, while the No. 2 seed faces the No. 3 seed in a traditional bracket-style format. The semifinals will be on March 17-18, and the championship is a best-of-three series that runs from March 24 through either March 25 or 26.
