Phil Mickelson congratulates Tiger Woods after Masters win: ‘What a great moment’ image

Phil Mickelson praised Tiger Woods after his victory at the Masters on Sunday.

Woods claimed his first major title in 11 years by shooting a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish the tournament at -13. Mickelson took to Twitter to congratulate his longtime competitor.

“What a great moment for the game of golf,” Mickelson said. “I’m so impressed by (Tiger Woods’) incredible performance, and I'm so happy for him to capture another Green Jacket. Truly a special day that will go down in history. Congratulations, Tiger!”

Woods is now a 15-time major champion, but he had last earned a title in one of those events at the U.S. Open in 2008. Woods career was then sidetracked by injuries and off-the-course issues. He was ranked as low as 1,199th in the world as recently as November 2017.

"It would be up there with one of the hardest I've ever had to win, just because of what has transpired the last couple of years, trying to come back and play,” Woods said Sunday. "I was close last year a couple of times, with a chance in the last two major championships. I applied what I learned from those and was able to seal the deal today."

Woods embraced his family in an emotional moment after his long-awaited victory.

“It's (been) a long time,” Woods said. “It's just unreal for me to experience this. My mom was here, she was there in '97, as well. I just couldn't be more happy and more excited. I'm kind of at a loss for words really.

“To have my kids there, it's come full circle. You know, my dad was here in '97 and now I'm the dad with two kids there.”

Mickelson finished the tournament in a tie for 18th place at -6 overall.
