The Open Championship went through a stretch where a select few golfers repeatedly won the title. In the past 10 years, that has changed.

Between 2000 and 2012, three golfers won multiple times: Tiger Woods won three times, while Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els won twice. Only six other golfers won it. But since then, it has been a first-time winner every time.

And over that span, the purse and prize money have jumped significantly. In 2013, the total purse was just over $8 million, with the winner receiving roughly $1.4 million. In 2023, the purse is more than three times as much at $16.5 million, with the first-place finisher to receive $3 million.

Could this be the year the Open Championship sees its first repeat winner since Els in 2012? Rory McIlroy, Cameron Smith and Collin Morikawa were viewed by oddsmakers as the most likely golfers to win their second title.
