The Northern Trust marks the beginning of the PGA Tour's 2019 FedEx Cup playoffs, meaning most of the biggest names in golf are in action this week.
The top 125 players on the FedEx Cup points list are eligible to compete at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. That includes Tiger Woods, who last played at the British Open in July, missing the cut at 6-over par. Woods, ranked fifth in the world, is 28th in points (1,003) and enters the weekend dealing with a stiff back.
New rules for the Tour Championship in 2019 make positioning ever important, so the next two weeks are make-or-break for Woods and others trying to climb the standings from the fringes. Players need to be in the top 70 in points to qualify for next week's BMW Championship, and the field whittles to 30 for the final weekend of the season in Atlanta.

Brooks Koepka enters The Northern Trust as the top points-earner in 2019 (2,887), followed by Rory McIlroy (2,315), Matt Kuchar (2,313), Xander Schauffele (1,858) and Gary Woodland (1,795). The last five FedEx Cup playoff winners also are in the field, including 2018 champion Justin Rose.
Hideki Matsuyama (No. 30) and Phil Mickelson (No. 34) join Woods at risk of missing the Tour Championship with a poor showing in the first leg of the playoffs. Jordan Spieth (No. 69) and Matthew Wolff (No. 70) are among those battling for a spot at Medinah Country Club next weekend.
