It's fair to say "Happy Gilmore" is in the pantheon of sports films.
The film is easily quotable and has become an iconic golf movie to the point there are often warning signs at places like TopGolf asking participants not to do the recognizable run-up shot. Many lists discussing most iconic movie villains will include Shooter McGavin, and a parody Twitter account for him has more than 500,000 followers.
The 1996 movie remains beloved 28 years after its release, and that love has evidently been enough to convince Netflix to green-light a sequel to the movie. The sequel comes nearly two years after Sandler said he had hoped to eventually make a sequel for the movie.
Here's everything you need to know about the sequel to "Happy Gilmore."
New Happy Gilmore movie details
Netflix announced on May 15 a sequel to "Happy Gilmore" would be coming to the streaming service. Beyond that, details on the movie are currently scarce.
The movie will be revisiting the golf career of the titular Happy Gilmore after his win in the Tour Championship, but there is not much of an indication how it will be portrayed. Beyond that, the release goes into no further details about where it will pick up in the life of Gilmore.
Sandler had previously suggested a sequel would focus on the senior golf tour. However, there are no official details about what the plot of the movie will be.
Happy Gilmore 2 release date
There is currently no release date listed by Netflix. The original movie was filmed from July 1995 to September 1995 and was released in February 1996. If everything is written and all that is left is filming, it stands to reason the movie could be released within a year.
However, there has been no reporting about the current status on production for the film.
Happy Gilmore cast
One cast member is set in stone: Sandler. The release notes Sandler will return as Gilmore to the film. However, there have been no other cast members officially announced for the movie.
Another that appears likely is Christopher McDonald, who portrayed the villainous McGavin. McDonald said Sandler had shown him a copy of the first draft for "Happy Gilmore 2," indicating a likely return of the 1996 film's antagonist.
"I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'" McDonald recalled in an interview with Audacy's 92.3 The Fan. "I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2."
Is Adam Sandler back as Happy Gilmore?
Sandler is lined up to be back as Gilmore. It would have been impossible to re-cast the iconic golfer with any other actor, and a sequel would make no sense without the titular character.
How old was Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore?
Sandler was born on Sept. 9, 1966. At the time of filming, Sandler would have been 28 for most of the movie (29 for a few days at the end of filming).
If production takes place in 2024, Sandler would be 57 going on 58, depending on when filming officially begins.
Is Julie Bowen in Happy Gilmore 2?
Julie Bowen portrayed the love interest of Gilmore in the original film in the role of Virginia Venit. Like other actors, she is unconfirmed to be returning to her prior role.
Bowen has since gone on to star in the popular sitcom "Modern Family" as Claire Dunphy, and has had other major roles in "Ed" and "Boston Legal" in her time post-"Happy Gilmore."
Bowen and Sandler did team up for a 2020 comedy, "Hubie Halloween."
Who will play Chubbs in Happy Gilmore 2?
There is no indication as of yet whether the character Derick "Chubbs" Peterson will be in a "Happy Gilmore" sequel. Chubbs was Gilmore's mentor who had spent a career playing golf before losing a hand to an alligator. The character died at the end of "Happy Gilmore" when he fell out of a window.
Chubbs was portrayed by Carl Weathers, who died at 76 years old in February. He is one of several main actors from the original film who have since passed away. Frances Bay (Grandma Gilmore), Bob Barker (himself) and Joe Flaherty (Donald) have all died since 2011.
