Still rebounding from a massive flood that wiped out the 2016 event, this week's PGA Tour stop in West Virginia is ready to prove it's still a big event.

The Greenbrier, one of America's most iconic old courses, was devastated by a massive storm weeks before the 2016 tournament, but the course recovered for last year's event.

Though the field doesn't boast a large quantity of big names, the event itself has been renamed A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, which should make for a special week.

The Course

The Old White TPC is a 7,286- yards par 70, and it's now in its second century of use. The course is one of five layouts at the resort, named for the Old White Hotel that stood on the property for more than six decades.

Stuart Appleby shot a 59 in 2010 to break the single-round scoring record, and he also broke the 72-hole course record that year (258).

Defending Champion

Xander Schauffele broke through with his first PGA Tour win after a battle with Robert Streb and Sebastian Munoz. Schauffele went on to earn Rookie of the Year honors after capturing the Tour Championship at East Lake. Since last summer, Schauffele has jumped from 352nd to 24th in the world ranking.

Favorites

Lefties Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson have enjoyed bounce-back seasons. Watson has won three times already this year, and has had success here in the past. Mickelson is still trying to earn enough points to automatically qualify for the fall Ryder Cup.

Reigning Players Championship winner Webb Simpson has two missed cuts since his win at TPC Sawgrass, but also a t-10 at the U.S. Open. playing near his home state of North Carolina, Simpson should be comfortable this week.

Sleepers

Aaron Wise took the golf world by storm earlier this year with a win and a runner up, which has moved him from 223rd to 74th in the world ranking. He has three missed cuts since his outburst of great form.

Geoff Ogilvy, a former U.S. Open winner, nearly had an exciting hole-in-one last week, and has quietly started showing improved form after a couple years of lost form.
