For the first time in his career, Shane Lowry is a major champion.
Lowry becomes the second Irish golfer, following Pádraig Harrington, to win the British Open. He shot a 15-under par for the tournament and his win was set up by a record-setting third round 63 on Saturday.
Lowry entered the final round with a four-stroke lead and never relented, cruising to a six-stroke win over Tommy Fleetwood while overcoming a strong wind and the looming threat of inclement weather, which caused Sunday’s tee times to be moved up.
He had his worst round of the tournament on Sunday, bogeying five holes and shooting 1-over par, but it didn’t matter. The struggles from everyone else at the top gave Lowry what was essentially a stress free victory.

Lowry, who had 66/1 odds to win before the British Open got underway, joins Gary Woodland as first-time major champions in 2019.
Brooks Koepka, who finished in a tie for fourth place, became just the fourth golfer in PGA Tour history to finish in the top four in every major in a calendar year.
The conditions made it a tough day overall for most golfers on Royal Portrush, as only two of the top-10 finishers shot under par on Sunday. 2018 winner Francesco Molinari had the best round of the day, shooting a 5 under to finish in a tie for 11th.
Sporting News tracked the leaders with updates and highlights from the final round. Catch up with all of the action below.
