Despite an excellent tournament in which he played three different positions along the back line, Mexico defender Carlos Salcedo says his future with the national team is uncertain.
Salcedo played left center back in place of the suspended Hector Moreno in El Tri's 2-0 defeat to Brazil on Monday. The 24-year-old looks to be a key piece for Mexico going forward but said he'd have to think about his place with the group.
"I’m really sad and have a lot of things to think about regarding my future. There are a lot things to think about," he said. "Personally, I feel really proud to have been part of a World Cup cycle with this team, and personally I have a lot of things to think about my future and see what’s going on."
Salcedo played every minute of Mexico's four World Cup matches. He started at right back in El Tri's 1-0 victory over Germany before shifting over to right center back for a 2-1 victory against Korea and the 3-0 defeat to Sweden. While he has grown into one of Mexico's key players, Salcedo said he needs to ponder whether he will continue to suit up for his country.
"I don’t know. I don’t know," said Salcedo when asked if he would keep representing Mexico. "I’m going to see things objectively, from my point of view, talk to my family, be honest with myself. There’s a lot to think about. I have a lot of things in my head right now. I don’t know."
The former Chivas and Real Salt Lake defender signed a deal this summer to keep him with Eintracht Frankfurt until 2022. He played with the Bundesliga team on loan from Chivas in the 2017-18 season. While Salcedo said he's not concerned about things in Frankfurt, he reiterated that the national team situation is more complicated.
"You never know what can happen in the future. I’m really calm about my club situation. I’m talking about things that can happen with the national team," he said. "They’re personal things, and I have to look and be honest with myself."
