Gareth Southgate will have the chance to experiment with his team when England visit Lithuania for their final World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

The Three Lions booked their tickets to Russia by defeating Slovenia courtesy of a last-minute Harry Kane goal on Thursday night.

With performances not entirely convincing, though, Southgate will now set about trying to turn his team into a competitive one at world football's biggest tournament.

Southgate has tried a 3-4-3 system in both of England's two friendlies this year and may be keen to test it again now World Cup qualification has been secured.

The former Middlesbrough boss confirmed on Saturday that Jack Butland will be handed a chance to impress in goal, replacing Joe Hart.

Hart's future as the Three Lions' number one shot-stopper remains a hot topic of discussion and Butland will do his chances of succeeding him permanently no harm with a strong display.

Potential starting XI: Butland; Smalling, Stones, Cahill; Walker, Henderson, Dier, Bertrand; Sterling, Kane, Dele.

GAME PREVIEW

Marcus Rashford England

England have qualified for the World Cup once again, but for 90 minutes their performance against Slovenia was as underwhelming as we have seen in a long time.

And the Three Lions have hardly set a high bar in recent years.

It was only in the handful of minutes added on that Kyle Walker and Harry Kane resembled something like the players they are for Manchester City and Tottenham and combined to secure three points.

The result will not disguise the fact that Southgate has a significant amount of work to do if England are to achieve anything in Russia.

There is widespread doubt over Joe Hart's claim to be England's best goalkeeper but - as was the case with Roy Hodgson and Wayne Rooney - Southgate is reluctant to replace him.

Central midfield is a major issue, with Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier both decent players in their own right but likely to struggle against Europe's top teams without some kind of tactical plan that mitigates the difference in quality.

And, up front, Marcus Rashford seems difficult to leave out but has not quite clicked with Kane.
