The first major Canadian curling event of the year is here this week as the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts starts today in Kamloops. 

The competition consists of the 18 best women's curling teams in the country. The annual competition determines the representative for Canada at the women's world curling championships. In addition, the winning club receives a cash prize and gold rings in the four-heart design of the Tournament of Hearts logo. 

Kerri Einarson and her crew are back as Team Canada. Einarson's team is the three-time defending champions, winning in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

There are 18 teams competing at the 2023 Scotties. Each squad is made up of a skip, a second, a third and a lead. Some teams also carry an alternate.

2023 Scotties pools

The 18 teams at the tournament are broken into two pools of nine. There is one team from each province in Canada, in addition to a team from Northern Ontario. There are three Wild Card teams and finally, Team Canada, which is the winning squad from the year prior. 

Each team plays one another during the pool play, totaling eight matches. The top three teams from each pool advance to the championship round.
