Co-Op Canadian Open 2023: Schedule, results and how to watch Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling major image

The first event in 2023 on the Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling calendar is set to start this week, as the Co-Op Canadian Open kicks off the new year.

The tournament is the fourth Grand Slam event of the season and the third major in the 2022-23 season. Camrose, Alberta is the site for the event.

There was no Canadian Open in 2021 or 2022 due to COVID-19. Brad Jacobs' team is technically the defending champions on the men's side, having won in 2020. Anna Hasselborg's crew are the reigning winners from the women's side.

What is the purse for the 2023 Canadian Open?

In total, the 16 men's and 16 women's teams are competing for a share of the combined prize purse of $300,000.

The money will be split up evenly towards the men's and women's, as each side will receive $150,000.

What is a triple knockout in curling?

The Canadian Open has a different format than some of the other competitions in the Grand Slam. This event is a triple knockout system in the preliminary round.

Teams must win three games before they lose three games in order to advance to the playoffs at the tournament.

All 16 teams start in the A Event. Winners remain in A while losers drop to B.

Winners in B stay in B until they lose. Then they fall to the C Event. Once in C, teams must win their remaining games in order to qualify. Any loss in C results in elimination.

Two A teams (3-0 records), three B teams (3-1 records) and three C teams (3-2 records) will compete in the quarterfinals. In the playoffs, it goes back to single elimination.
