India will be out to protect their unbeaten record when they take on Australia at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St. Lucia in what is shaping up to be a pivotal T20 Cricket World Cup Super 8 decider.

Afghanistan's thrilling win over the Aussies opened up Group 1 of the Super 8 stage, with as many as four teams still in with a chance of making it to the semifinals.

There was a sense of deja vu for Afghanistan in Kingstown on Sunday, when Glenn Maxwell single-handedly led Australia's chase in the T20 World Cup Super 8 tie.

Almost six months back, the very same Aussie power-hitter had denied the Afghans a historic win in the 2023 ODI World Cup with a record-breaking double-century. But in a moment of brilliance from Noor Ahmad, courtesy of Gulbadin Naib, Afghanistan overcame the threat this time, and everything fell apart for Australia.

India, meanwhile, are unbeaten in this tournament and the commanding 50-run win over Bangladesh has propelled them to the top of the table with two wins from two games in the group, also with a healthy NRR of +2.430.

Given their superior NRR, the Men In Blue are all set to make the T20 World Cup semifinal for a second straight time. A win or a no result in the last game against Australia will seal them claim a semifinal berth irrespective of the Afghanistan versus Bangladesh result.

A loss to Australia in Gros Islet is also unlikely to hurt their chances unless the Mitchell Marsh-led side secures a hefty win to counter the NRR factor, and Afghanistan also topples the number during their win over Bangladesh.

The Aussies, meanwhile, are on the brink. They will have to clinch a convincing win against India and then expect Afghanistan to lose against Bangladesh.

India T20 Cricket World Cup Schedule

India began their T20 World Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over Ireland on June 5 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Four days later, they staged a thrilling comeback to beat arch-rivals Pakistan by six runs in a low-scoring match at the same venue.

On June 12, India faced co-hosts USA, securing a smooth 7-wicket win in New York. The Men in Blue were then scheduled to wrap up their group stage against Canada on June 15 at Central Broward Park, Lauderhill, Florida. However, the match was abandoned without a ball bowled due to a wet outfield caused by heavy rain.

Thereafter, India moved to the Super 8 stage, where they faced Afghanistan on June 20 in Bridgetown, Barbados. The Men in Blue displayed a pair of professional performances to beat Afghanistan and Bangladesh by 47 and 50 runs, respectively.

Their Super 8 campaign will conclude against ODI World Cup winners Australia on June 24 in Gros Islet, St. Lucia.
