This year, the Champions League has adapted a new format, which includes expanding from 32 to 36 teams with clubs organized into four groups of nine. Each club will face eight different teams with four matches at home and four on the road.
To make the final, teams must finish league play as a top-16 seed. The top eight automatically advance to the Round of 16 while those finishing ninth to 24th will play in the knockout stage, which will be played in February.
The Round of 16 will commence in March while the quarterfinals take place in April and semifinals in April and May.
Additionally, teams that finish in the bottom 12 of league stage will not drop into the Europa League, instead eliminated from European competition for that season.
