Harry Kane and Vinicius Junior each scored second-half penalties as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid played out a compelling 2-2- draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal.

Thomas Tuchel's side made the early running at the Allianz Arena but Madrid hit the front in the 24th minute when Vinicius made the most of some abject Bayern defending to tuck home Toni Kroos' sumptuous throughball.

Bayern struggled to recover their poise from that setback but Leroy Sane ignited the comeback with a moment of inspiration as he cut inside from the right flank and sent a rasping shot beyond Andriy Lunin.

Madrid's heads hadn't had a chance to clear by the time Lucas Vazquez hung out a leg to bring down Jamal Musiala and Kane coolly slotted into the bottom-left corner as Lunin tumbled in the opposite direction.

Real Madrid (4-3-1-2, right to left): 13. Andriy Lunin (GK) — 17. Lucas Vazquez, 6. Nacho (12. Eduardo Camavinga), 22. Antonio Rudiger, 23. Ferland Mendy — 15. Federico Valverde, 8. Toni Kroos (10. Luka Modric), 19. Aurelien Tchouameni  — 5. Jude Bellingham (21. Brahim Diaz) — 11. Rodrygo (14. Joselu), 7. Vinicius Junior.

Another Englishman almost got in on the act but not the one you might expect. Eric Dier rose highest to power a header from a right-wing corner straight at the Real Madrid goalkeeper.

The former Tottenham defender's presence for a game of this magnitude looked like a potential weak spot for Madrid's lethal attack to prey upon, but it was his centre-back partner Kim Min-jae who erred.

The South Korea international darted out of the defensive line haphazardly to allow Vinicius in for the opening goal and he repeated the error before Manuel Neuer saved from the Brazil international in the 79th minute.

Two minutes later, Kim clumsily brought down Rodrygo and Vinicius converted from 12 yards for his 21st goal of the season. With a return date at the Santiago Bernabeu eight days from now, it feels like advantage to the 14-time champions.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid analysis

Sane plays through the pain to end goal drought

As the Bayern players took the weight off and received some halftime instructions, Sane was still out on the turf, running, moving, not stopping. The reason for this unusual interval routine was the groin condition the Germany winger is nursing. Put simply, if he stops, he's not likely to get going again.

Sane knows all about things in full flight coming to a grinding halt. In his first 18 games of the season for club and country, he scored 11 times. That run concluded with a brace against Darmstadt and then, well, nothing. Heading into tonight's game, that remained the 28-year-old's most recent goal.

Sane wasted a first-minute opportunity and looked understandably low on confidence inside the box, but his link-up with Kane was Bayern's main source of danger during the first half. He kept plugging away and the goal, when it arrived, was worth the wait. Six months of frustration lashed beyond Lunin as the Madrid goalkeeper grasped at fresh air.

Another moment like that could prove to be the difference at the Bernabeu. Here's hoping they can at least let Sane have a sit-down in the meantime.

Kane makes experience tell to leave Bellingham trailing

Much of the pre-match build-up focused upon the showdown between England's newest superstar and the national-team captain. In many respects, Jude Bellingham's gargantuan start to life at Real Madrid has put Kane's maiden season at Bayern in the shade.

Never mind that he has an astonishing record of 43 goals in 43 games — the fact Bayern have failed to win the Bundesliga title has stolen the headlines. Quite frankly, without the masterful Kane, they would not have come close. The 30-year-old moved to the Allianz Arena to test himself on these occasions and, as Bayern pinned Madrid back early on, he was their best player, dropping deep to unfurl his array of attacking passes and trying one audacious shot from the halfway line.

When he grasped the ball for the penalty, there was little doubt over the outcome. Kane's miss for England against France in Qatar from 12 yards would have broken lesser players; he simply decided to become an even better penalty taker. Bellingham surely knew he was on a hiding to nothing when he tried to put his countryman off before the kick. Kane was already in the zone.

It wasn't the only time on Tuesday that Kane looked like he had a decade on his dazzling compatriot. There's nothing wrong with Bellingham's big-game chops — just ask Barcelona — but as was the case for much of the quarterfinal against Manchester City, he spent a lot of this match on the margins, chasing the ball before being substituted. Bellingham is a thrilling operator with a great future ahead of him, but there's nothing like watching a master at work, entirely comfortable on his stage and within his own skin. This was Kane's night.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

It finishes all square. Bayern were in the ascendency for periods of both halves and did well to wrestle back the initiative from Madrid after Vinicius' opener. Ultimately, Thomas Tuchel will rue Kim having a night to forget, with the normally reliable Korean defender at fault for both Madrid goals. This is finely poised but you also sense Madrid have Bayern just where they want them

90th minute+2: Kane flashes a cross over the top with Tchouameni diving in. Have we not had enough penalties tonight, lads?

90th minute: We'll have three minutes of stoppage time.

88th minuteMazraoui lunges in on Brahim just inside the box. Risky but he gets away with it.

86th minuteGnabry cuts inside Mendy but he's going away from goal and hacks over left-footed.

83rd minuteGOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Vinicius Junior!!!!!

Another cool penalty as Vinicius dabs his shot down the middle with Neuer diving to his right. All square again.

81st minutePENALTY TO REAL MADRID!!!! Oh Kim, what are you doing? A handful of shirt for good measure as he untidily brings Rodrygo down. Vinicius will try to equalise.

79th minute: Vinicius in behind Kim again. We've seen this movie before. The angle is against Vinicius this time, though and Neuer makes a fine save.

75th minute: Guerreiro heads clear and that will be Kroos' last involvement as Modric comes on for his long-time team mate. Brahim is also into the action in place of Bellingham.

74th minute: Clever feet from Vinicius and Laimer brings him down. Dangerous Madrid free-kick on the left. Kroos over it.

67th minute: Mazraoui gets down the left where Madrid are finding themselves overloaded. Kane takes the shot early and it's deflected just wide. Eric Dier with the free header from the corner! Saved! The Englishman really met that but it was straight at Lunin.

65th minute: A busy few moments for Kroos, who is booked for fouling Kane and now takes the captain's armband as Camavinga replaces Nacho. That means Tchouameni will revert to centre-back.

64th minute: Vinicius Jr into the Bayern box. Dier makes an excellent block, although the Brazilian really should have picked out Bellingham.

60th minute: Muller slips a pass through to Kane, Rudiger bundles him over but referee Turpin has no interest in giving a second penalty.

57th minuteGOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Harry Kane (pen)!!!

Stuttered run-up, cool as you like. Lunin edges to his left and Kane rolls into the opposite corner.

55th minutePENALTY TO BAYERN MUNICH!!! Oh my word, this game has turned on its head. Lucas hangs out a leg and brings down Musiala. Obvious penalty. Kane to take.

53rd minuteGOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Leroy Sane!!!

Out of nowhere the moment of magic Bayern need. Sane cuts inside from the right, shifts the ball onto his left foot and fizzes one past Lunin. Not a bad time to score your first goal since late October.

51st minute: Sane coughts up possession and Madrid can attack. Kroos takes aim and that's a fine save from Neuer, especially as it looked like there was a slight deflection involved.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We're back underway and there's a change for Bayern, with Guerreiro on for Goretzka.

Halftime

Kane heads clear at the near post and that's a warp on the first half. Madrid had to ride out a bit of an early storm but then Vinicius Jr. gave them the lead and it's been relatively plain sailing from that point.

45th minute: Only a three-man wall, which makes Rodrygo's eyes light up. Nevertheless, he clatters his shot into Kane on the edge of said wall. Corner, Bayern see it out but Laimer concedes another.

43rd minute: Flick on from Valverde, Bellingham is goal side of Mazraoui who scythes him down on the edge of the box.

42nd minute: Kane whips one across the wall, catches it nicely but it's wide.

40th minute: Oh, well they have a chance now because Nacho has fouled Musiala right on the edge of the D.

39th minute: Muller pings a return pass into Sane's feet in the Madrid box but he can't get it under control. Bayern have created little of note since going behind.

35th minute: Neuer piles through a crowd of bodies to punch a Kroos set piece to safety.

33rd minute: Bayern haven't really recovered their poise since going behind. The tempo has slowed and they look tentative. Thomas Tuchel is imploring his players to crank things up on the sidelines.

29th minute: Kim was partly culpable for the goal for stepping out. Vinicius tries to burn around the outside of him but the hulking Korean defender shuts the door.

24th minute: GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Vinicius Junior!!!

After all that time under pressure Madrid lead because it's just what they do. Bayern inexplicably stand off Kroos and allow him to pick a typically gorgeous pass through to Vinicius, who slots his 20th goal of the season beyond Neuer.

21st minute: Lucas wins a corner for Madrid. Kroos works it short before slapping the ball miles off target.

17th minute: A poor Neuer clearance goes to Mendy and Madrid have their first significant spell of possession in the Bayern half. They don't do a great deal with it.

12th minute: Muller scoots down the right channel and cuts back to Musiala, who has room to shoot just inside the Madrid box. It's fairly harmlessly over, but Ancelotti's men need to tighten up sharpish.

9th minute: Goretzka snaps into a tackle and Kane tries a shot from halfway...just over. Lunin was hoping and praying there.

7th minute: Madrid really haven't got going here and they cough up the ball on halfway. Kane slides a pass through to Sane. The winger can't really get it under his spell and blasts over.

6th minute: Kimmich hands it deep, it goes beyond Dier and bounces over Goretzka. Still, Bayern keeps the attack alive and Sane cleverly backheels to Kane, who shoots at Lunin left footed.

5th minute: Musiala scampering into the Madrid box and Nacho clears behind for a corner. They work it short and Valverde makes the challenge on Kimmich. Another Bayern corner.

1st minute: Chance inside the first minute for Sane! A deft touch from Kane puts his teammate in. The angle was against Sane, his finish lacked conviction and Lunin makes the save.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Off we go!

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams out to a sea of red at the Allianz Arena. There's a stunning tifo playing tribute to the late, great Franz Beckenbauer.

35 mins before kickoff: There's plenty of pre-match focus on England duo Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham before this one. Each man has enjoyed spectacular debut seasons with their clubs. Despite Bayern ceding the Bundesliga to Bayer Leverkusen, Kane has scored 42 goals in as many matches across all competitions. Bellingham's Clasico-winning goal to virtually seal LaLiga glory for Madrid was his 21st to sit alongside 10 assists in 35 matches.

1 hour before kickoff: And here's how the hosts line up. Thomas Muller, who knows these occasions like the back of his hand, is into the starting XI as Raphael Guerreiro drops to the bench.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Ancelotti is gunning for European title number five, having triumphed in 2002/03 and 2006/07 with AC Milan before masterminding Madrid's runs to glory in 2013/14 and 2021/22. In between those latter successes, he had a spell in charge of Bayern. That yielded the Bundesliga title in 2016/17 but he exited the Champions League against Madrid in the quarterfinals and a 3-0 group-stage defeat to another former club, Paris Saint-Germain, led to his dismissal.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: As is his wont on these occasions, Carlo Ancelotti has named his starting XI nice and early. Club captain Nacho partners Antonio Rudiger at centre-back as he did in the quarterfinal second leg against Manchester City. That frees up Aurelien Tchouameni to start in midfield. Lucas Vazquez replaces the suspended Dani Carvajal at right-back as expected.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to a mouth-watering UEFA Champions League semifinal between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. These teams have 20 European titles between them and this is their 27th meeting on this rarified stage.
