It wasn't a high-octane contest by any stretch of the imagination as the Calgary Stampeders bested the BC Lions 27-13 at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns in a game that was more memorable for its defence, with Lions quarterback Jonathon Jennings unable to overcome two interceptions and several sacks.

The game's only touchdowns were scored in the opening and closing quarters, with much of the middle portions spent with the teams trading field position and attempts at goals through their kickers.

The win sees the Stamps maintain their iron grip of top spot of the West Division, with Calgary improving to 10-1-1. The Lions remain at the bottom of the division, falling to 6-6 on the season.

Defence wins games

The Calgary defence was suffocating from the outset, as Ciante Evans intercepted a Jennings pass during the game's very first drive.

Evans' play set the tone for his teammates, and the Stamps went on to rack up four sacks to keep BC's offence at bay.

Among the Stamps with at least one sack was Alex Singleton, who had another massive defensive game with 11 tackles in total.

Perhaps most important was the lack of touchdowns for the Lions, as Calgary kept the visitors out of the end zone for the entire game.

Kickers earn their money

Neither team was looking terribly proficient in getting into the end zone, so the game became a battle of kickers and punters as the majority of the points were scored off the feet of each team's unsung heroes.

Both teams had four field goals apiece, with Ty Long and Rene Paredes trading successful kicks for their respective sides.
