An impressive calendar year for 20-year-old Brooke Henderson culminated in winning the Canadian Press' Bobbie Rosenfeld award as Canada's top female athlete for 2017, the Canadian Press announced Wednesday

Henderson garnered 56 percent of the vote, taken by broadcasters and editors across Canada. Swimmer Kylie Mass finished second on the ballot, and gymnast Ellie Black and soccer player Christine Sinclair finished third.

"(Henderson) captured the attention of Canadian golf fans in a way not seen since the adoration given previously to Mike Weir," said Winnipeg Free Press sports editor Steve Lyons in the Canadian Press' release.

In June, Henderson won the Meijer LPGA. She nearly captured the KPMG Women's PGA Championship later that month before losing in a playoff. Henderson finished the calendar ranked 13th and sixth in earnings, pocketing just over $1.5 million USD. Henderson final victory of the season came  at the New Zealand Women's Open in September, when she finished five strokes ahead of the field at 17 under par.

The Smith Falls, Ont. native has five career LPGA Tour victories, three shy Sandra Post for the most ever by a Canadian.

The announcement comes a day after Denis Shapovalov was named the top male athlete for 2017.
