Traveling to Japan as the underdog to defend his WBC and WBO super bantamweight titles against the great Naoya Inoue, Stephen Fulton understands the gravity of this bout. The American is ready to defy all odds on July 25.
The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, takes place at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo and will be broadcast by ESPN+ in the U.S.
Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) has been competing for gold since 2021 when he won the WBO title. In each fight, "Cool Boy Steph" has elevated his game, facing some of the toughest fighters in the division.
He now travels outside the U.S. for the first time as a pro and fights for a showdown against a pound-for-pound great. The 28-year-old looks at this fight as not just something that enhances the size of his wallet, but as a defining moment in his career.
“I didn’t take this fight for money,” Fulton said on the PBC Podcast via Boxing News. “That’s what other guys wanna do. That’s not my mindset. My mindset is strictly going over there because I know I can win, and I want to challenge myself while doing it. I want to put myself to the test. This is a huge f------ fight. So why not try to live up to that moment? I didn’t just do this for money, it just so happened I was offered some nice money, so that’s the icing on the cake. So let’s go do it.”
