Jaime Munguia and John Ryder to square off at super middleweight
Golden Boy/ Matchroom Boxing

Unbeaten Mexican star Jaime Munguia takes on John Ryder in a super middleweight showdown at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 27. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by DAZN worldwide.

Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) is the former WBO super welterweight champion. The Tijuana star has drifted through the 160 and 168-pound divisions since 2020, but he is yet to secure a world championship fight at either of these weight classes.

Not surprisingly, his target is undisputed super middleweight champion and pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez.

"I think a fight against Canelo would be something pretty good for my career and for everyone who wants this fight," Munguia told ProBox TV.

"First of all, we have to get through this challenge we have in front of us with John Ryder, and then we'll see what comes next."

Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) is a former two-time world title challenger. In 2019, the English southpaw was deemed very unlucky not to get the decision against then-WBA and Ring super middleweight champ Callum Smith. In May of last year, Ryder was easily outpointed by Canelo.

"[Munguia’s] last fight with Sergiy [Derevyanchenko]. he showed some vulnerabilities," Ryder told Matchroom Boxing.

"He’s made a trainer change to Freddie Roach and that might be a good thing, it might not be, we’ll see. I know what he brings to the table, he throws a lot of shots, and he throws them with bad intentions, but that’s when I think I can capitalize on him."

Jaime Munguia vs. John Ryder prediction, best bets

I have to roll with the younger man in this fight. Munguia is 27 years old and Ryder is 35. While I believe the pair are well matched in terms of skills, that eight-year age differential is likely to come into play.

I have almost no doubt that the super-tough Ryder will have success. He’s a sharp puncher and his ability to create angles and use his southpaw stance to his advantage will give Munguia fits. The problem will be maintaining that strategy in a fast-paced 12-rounder.

The best win of Ryder’s career was when he upset former middleweight champ Daniel Jacobs in February 2022. However, Jacobs gave Ryder room to work in a tactical boxing match. In this matchup, the Englishman will be pressured from bell to bell.

It’ll be a much harder fight than what many expect, but I foresee Munguia closing the scoring gap from the midway point and securing a close but clear unanimous decision win.

Sporting News prediction: Munguia via UD 12 (Per BetMGM: -333)
