With over 300 rounds of sparring against each other, Danny Jacobs and Sergiy Derevyanchenko are more than familiar with each other.
But if Jacobs (34-2, 29 KOs) wants to continue to assert himself as a top middleweight — and possibly land a shot against Canelo Alvarez or rematch with Gennady Golovkin — he’s likely going to have to get Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10 KOs) out of his way in their fight Saturday night (10 p.m. ET, HBO) at the Hulu Theater inside Madison Square Garden. And in convincing fashion.

That’s a challenge that Jacobs is up for, regardless of the circumstance.
“This platform that I have to prove that I’m the best middleweight in the world is a very difficult task and I thank Sergiy for accepting this challenge, even though it’s bittersweet because we’ve known each other for some time — sparring partners, [Derevyanchenko’s trainer] Gary [Stark Jr.] was a former trainer of mine,” Jacobs said during the final press conference earlier in the week. “So, to see these guys on the opposite side of the ring come fight night, it’s going to be bittersweet.”
Bittersweet, but part of the boxing business. Plus, it should help that the bout is for the vacant IBF world middleweight title. So, while “The Miracle Man” looks to take the next step in his career, “The Technician” seeks a win against his toughest opponent to date.
“It’s going to be a big war,” Derevyanchenko said, “and the belt is going to me.”
The Jacobs-Derevyanchenko main fight card also includes Alberto Machado facing Yuandale Evans for Machado’s WBA “regular” junior lightweight title and Heather Hardy and Shelly Vincent having a rematch for the vacant WBO women’s featherweight championship.
Sporting News will be live-blogging the main card’s round-by-round results right here, beginning at 10 p.m.
