With a date with Ryan Garcia on the line, Gervonta Davis is ready to start 2023 on a high note. “Tank” defends his WBA (Regular) lightweight title against Hector Luis Garcia on January 7.

The fight takes place inside the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

A 2012 Golden Gloves champion, Davis made his pro debut in 2013. Winning the IBF super-featherweight title in 2017, Davis lost the title after missing weight for a fight against Francisco Fonseca. In 2018, Davis won the WBA (Super) super-featherweight title, and became WBA (Regular) lightweight champion against Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2019.

He has since defended the lightweight title three times, his last fight a TKO win against Rolando Romero in May.

“This is really important for me. It’s huge to open up the opportunity for other fighters to showcase their skills on the big stage," Davis stated at the pre-fight press conference. "When you make your mark in the sport, it’s about coming back and showing other people that it can happen for them. This is just me trying to get over that hump. I don’t think of it as a dream come true. I’m not where I want to be yet. This fight is the next step."

Making his pro debut in 2016, Garcia shocked the world in February by beating Chris Colbert via unanimous decision, ending Colbert’s undefeated streak. In August, he beat Roger Gutierrez via unanimous decision to win the WBA super-featherweight title.

“I’m not fazed by anything people say," Garcia stated. "I know who I am and I know what to do. My preparation has been so good that I’m going to be ready to give 100%. I know that I have the height advantage, but I can adapt myself to the rhythm of my opponent. I know that I’m facing one of the best fighters out there, but I’m fully confident I have what it takes to win."

If Davis wins, he will face Ryan Garcia in a superfight sometime in April.
