Devin "The Dream" Haney has waited four long years to get his hands on Vasiliy Lomachenko. And for four years, Lomachenko wasn't interested in answering the call. But now that Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) is the undisputed lightweight champion he has something that Lomachenko wants and the two will battle at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV on May 20 in a showdown where titles and how the future of boxing will shake out are both on the line.
MORE: Everything you need to know about Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko
Haney became the undisputed champion by entering enemy territory and dispatching of WBA, IBF, and WBO champion George Kambosos in Australia last June. The two met again four months later with Haney putting a worse beating on Kambosos to retain his undisputed titles. In pursuit of his 30th victory, the 24-year-old will face an opponent that will cement his status as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.
Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) previously held the WBA, IBF, and WBO lightweight titles but surrendered them in a decision loss to Teofimo Lopez back in October 2020. He's won three fights in a row since the loss while taking some time off to defend his home country of Ukraine in a war with Russia. His departure allowed Haney to step in and challenge Kambosos and now Lomachenko is coming to claim what he felt was his.

Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko prediction, best bets
Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko aren’t just battling for the undisputed lightweight championship, they are battling for the present and future of boxing. At 24 years of age, Haney has an opportunity to crown himself as the king of boxing’s next generation. A victory over Lomachenko will cement his status and certainly land him in the upper regions of the fictional pound-for-pound list. Lomachenko is trying to prove that he’s as good as we thought he was. At 35, he doesn’t have much time left in the sport but wants to do some cementing of his own with his legacy by becoming the undisputed champion and turning back the young star.
Although this should be a pick ‘em fight, oddsmakers are favoring Haney pretty heavily at -250. That is truly surprising considering that Lomachenko was once recognized as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Granted, he has lost recently to Teofimo Lopez but that wasn’t by a wide margin at all. Given Lomachenko’s unique set of skills, it’s hard to make sense out of him being a 2-to-1 underdog.
The only thing that makes sense for Lomachenk's underdog status is his lack of size. Both of Lomachenko’s losses as a professional were to opponents who had a considerable size advantage. Even though Haney makes 135, he swells up in weight the day of the fight and uses his size and skill to make things difficult for his opponents. Not to mention that Haney masterfully uses clinch work to prevent opponents from gaining momentum and that could be the biggest factor in the fight.
But Haney hasn’t faced an opponent like Lomachenko, who has some of the best footwork the sport has ever seen. He deftly covers distance and cuts angles that leave his opponents vulnerable. Haney isn’t indestructible but all of his opponents have had difficulty getting past his jab. If anybody has the ability to nullify Haney’s best weapon, it’s Lomachenko.
That is all easier said than done.
In almost any other situation, the smart pick would be Haney by decision. His size, youth, and skill are the perfect combination to see him retain his undisputed titles. However, given the odds and the fact that this could be Lomachenko's last chance to obtain greatness, I don’t expect a slow start due to “downloading information” or any underestimation of how good Haney is. This is a wildly unpredictable fight but neither side should run away with it. Anticipate a high-octane chess match that could go either way and perhaps end with a controversial decision that could end up in favor of Lomachenko. Take the value bet and hope for the best.
Sporting News prediction: Lomachenko by decision (+330)
