Canelo Alvarez set to defend undisputed boxing title vs. Jaime Munguia on May 4 in Las Vegas, per reports image

Undisputed super middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez has reportedly agreed to face fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia on May 4 in Las Vegas. The original story was broken by ESPN's Salvador Rodriguez, who cited multiple sources.

On February 26, reports emerged that Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) had parted ways with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), with whom he signed a three-fight deal last year. After scoring a one-sided decision over Jermell Charlo in September, Canelo wanted to take on his twin brother and reigning WBC middleweight champion, Jermall. That's when the problems arose.

The PBC were apparently unwilling to fulfil Canelo's $35 million guarantee for that bout, so, according to Rodriguez, the Mexican fighter has decided to go back under the DAZN/Matchroom umbrella to take on Munguia. Scheduled for Cinco De Mayo weekend, this all-Mexican showdown is almost sure to be a financial success.

An official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Who is Jaime Munguia?

Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) is a former WBO super welterweight champion. The 27-year-old hails from Tijuana and has developed into a popular crowd attraction in recent years.

Having outgrown the 154-pound division, Munguia made the move to middleweight. Despite winning all of his fights at 160 pounds, his form was often patchy and he was unable to secure a title fight.

However, since making the move to super middleweight, Munguia has looked improved in wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko (UD 12) and John Ryder (TKO 9). He is now working under the tutelage of acclaimed trainer Freddie Roach.

Other signature wins have come against Sadam Ali, Liam Smith, Gary O'Sullivan and Gabe Rosado.

Munguia is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
