While everyone is thinking ahead for a potential super fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, Callum Smith is ready to play spoiler. The English fighter faces Beterbiev for the latter’s IBF, WBC, and WBO light heavyweight titles on January 13. The fight in the Centre Videotron in Canada airs on ESPN+ in the U.S.
Beterbiev has held world gold since 2017, besting Enrico Koelling for the IBF light heavyweight belt. The 38-year-old has since demolished everyone in his path with his power, winning 100% of his fights via knockout. After a bone infection halted the contest between the two from initially taking place in August, a healthy Beterbiev looks to hold onto his status as king of the light heavyweights.
Smith is a former WBA super middleweight champion, winning the title in 2018. After Canelo Alvarez took the belt away from him by force in 2020, “Mundo” moved to light heavyweight and has won two in a row. The 33-year-old is the underdog and knows a Beterbiev-Bivol undisputed title fight is on the horizon. However, like Eddie Hearn, he’s confident he can change things up in the division.
"I don’t blame people for wanting to see Beterbiev-Bivol," Smith told Boxing Social via Boxing News 24/7. "As a boxing fan, that’s a fight that I would like to see. It is a little disrespectful when there are people in boxing posting, and I’m due to fight him [Beterbiev] in January.
"I’m confident in my own ability, and I feel I can beat him when I’m at my best. I believe the best version of me beats anyone in the world. In my eyes, it’ll be me [beating] Beterbiev and then me against Bivol after that. So, I think I can ruin people’s plans."
