The sand is scorching in Tokyo — literally — and so is Canada's beach volleyball teams. Both of Canada's women's beach volleyball teams have bumped, set and spiked their way into the quarterfinal of the tournament.

Reigning world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes easily defeated the Spanish duo of Liliana Fernández and Elsa Baquerizo in straight sets (21-13, 21-13) in the knockout stage. It marked their fourth straight victory to keep their 2021 Tokyo Olympics record spotless at 4-0.

Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson had a little tougher route. They went into the Round of 16 with a 1-2 record and faced the No. 3-ranked American pair of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil. They lost the first set 24-22 before roaring back from a 10-4 deficit to take the second set 21-18.

In the final set, there was some controversy as a Sponcil serve was initially ruled out. Team USA challenged and thought they won the point. Canada seemed to challenge that ruling and won, which left everyone scratching their heads. But, in the end, the official had just hit the wrong button and USA had actually lost the initial challenge.

Canada has never medaled — or finished better than fifth, even — in women's beach volleyball at the Olympics. Canada's lone medal was a bronze by John Child and Mark Heese in 1996, the first-ever Olympic tournament.

Whichever teams win these two matches will play each other for a spot in the gold-medal match. If it's the two Canadian squads, it would be quite an interesting event as now-competitors Bansley and Pavan teamed up in Rio five years ago.
