Briles is returning to Texas after coaching Guelfi Fierenze, an American football club in Florence, Italy, since August 2018. He last coached stateside during the 2015 college football season at Baylor. The school fired him on May 26, 2016, amid a scandal involving sexual assault and domestic violence allegations against several of his players.
Briles compiled a 99-65 record and won three conference championships over his 13-season coaching career at Houston and Baylor. He last coached high school football at Stephenville High School in Stephenville, Texas, from 1988-99.
After being fired by Baylor, Briles served as an assistant coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League before leaving for Guelfi Fierenze. Most recently, Southern Miss interviewed him in January to be its offensive coordinator.
