Day 1 saw the Boomers keep their hopes of an elusive basketball medal alive while the Kookaburras made the men's hockey final for the first time in 17 years.

The Boomers made a statement with a 97-59 demolition of Argentina to set up a semi-final showdown against Team USA.

The Hockeyroos also put their rivals on notice with a 3-1 victory over Germany to book their place in the gold medal match against Belgium on Thursday.

Meanwhile, boxer Harry Garside is guaranteed at least a bronze medal after winning his lightweight quarter final against Kazakhstani veteran Zafir Safiullin.

Garside will face highly-rated Cuban Andy Cruz in the semi final on Friday.
