Running back Reggie Bush's calf injury is not as serious as first thought, according to San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula.

Bush has been diagnosed with a mild calf strain. Though the muscle is not torn, the 49ers are still going to have an MRI done this week as a precaution.

"They're going to send him down to get tested,” Tomsula said on Tuesday via the Bay Area News Group. "He looked good. He's not running yet but he looks fine."

Bush left Monday's 20-3 season-opening NFL win over the Minnesota Vikings in the first quarter after tallying just two carries for eight yards.

He limped off the field and was carted from the sideline to the locker room for further examination.

The 49ers have not yet established a timetable for his return, though he could still play in week two when San Francisco visit the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I will give you that answer as soon as we have it," Tomsula added. "Again, we don't want something that can be taken care of [treated and healed] in four days to end up being six weeks. So I do want to stay on that approach.

"I mean, if he can play, he's going to play."

Despite a history of injuries, Bush was picked up by San Francisco as a free agent this off-season and signed a one-year contract worth an estimated $2.5million.

After suffering an ankle injury in week five last season, he was limited to just 11 games with the Detroit Lions. He finished the year with 297 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 76 carries with 40 receptions for 253 yards.
