UFC 254: Khabib Nurmagomedov retires after submission win over Justin Gaethje image

Khabib Nurmagomedov has earned an emotional second-round submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 to defend his lightweight world title.

Just months after his dad, Abdulmanap, died Khabib dominated the bout, locking in a triangle choke and putting Gaethje to sleep 1:32 into the second frame.

It's Nurmagomedov's third defence of the 155-pound belt, equaling the record held by BJ Penn, Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar.

He won't add to the record though, with the 29-0 Nurmagomedov announcing his retirement in the cage immediately afterwards.

"I want to say, this was my last fight," he told Jon Anik.

"There was no way I was going to come here without my father.

"When the UFC called me about Justin, I talked to my mother. She didn't want me to fight without my father, but I promised this would be my last fight.

"This was my last fight.

"The only thing I want from the UFC is to put me as the number one pound-for-pound in the world. I deserve this."

If it is the last time we see Khabib in the cage, he'll go out as one of the greatest to ever do it.

Since claiming the vacant lightweight title by beating Al Iaquinta in April 2018, Khabib has absolutely dominated Conor McGregor, Dutin Poirier and now Gaethje.

Other recent highlights include a destruction of Edson Barboza, a beatdown of Michael Johnson in New York in which he told UFC president Dana White that he deserved a title shot and a victory over future lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.

Speaking afterward, Gaethje said he'll be ready to go again in two months.

"I felt alive. That's why I step in here," he said.

"Adrenaline, endorphins released. I stuck around to praise him. He did what he had to do. He's so strong and I know he'll make his father proud.

"I fight for a living. The best thing about getting choked out is there's nothing consequential to your long-term health.

"I said I have five wars left and I haven't had one since I said that."

It took just over two minutes for Khabib's pressure and pace to show itself.

Gaethje had stayed at range, looking for kicks early on, but once he decided to turn it on, Khabib stalked the American around the cage, landing plenty.

While Khabib was his customarily clinical self, Gaethje's punches were wilder. He threw 'em with everything and even looked a little gassed.

Gaethje connected with one big left hook, but Nurmagomedov ate it easily and kept walking forward.

The Eagle stuck his first takedown in the final 30 seconds of the opening round, but ran out of time to get a submission win with an armbar.

In the second, Khabib looked like a middleweight fighting a lightweight, and despite Gaethje landing a few nice leg-kicks, Nurmagomedov hit another takedown.

Like a hot knife through butter, Nurmagomedov locked in a triangle choke.

Gaethje tapped, referee Jason Herzog missed it and the American went to sleep.
