The UFC heads to New Jersey for UFC 302. The main event will be Dustin Poirier looking to finally win a UFC title against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

Makhachev is 14-1 with the UFC and is on a thirteen-fight win streak. The Russian and multi-time medalist in Samba beat Charles Oliveira in 2022 to win the UFC lightweight title.

Poirier is 22-7 with one no-contest inside the octagon. He is a former interim lightweight champion, 0-2 in bouts for the actual belt. His last fight was a statement-making knockout win in March against Benoit Saint-Denis to return to being a top contender.

“The Diamond” will be Makhachev’s first big test in the division, as two title defenses were against former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Poirier’s new game plan has been to win via guillotine, but Makhachev, with eleven wins via submission, believes his skills are far superior to his opponents.

“Dustin, he is a warrior, legend – he has more than everybody experience in this sport,” Makhachev told TMZ via MMA Junkie. “But his problem is his style. That’s the one problem this guy has. His weak point is wrestling and grappling, and I have the key for the easy fight.

"And if I follow the plan, I can beat him easy. My style and Khabib’s (Nurmagomedov) style, it’s worst style for Dustin. People who can take him down, hold him there, it always gives him problems.”
