The strength of the Australian women's tennis contingent certainly took a hit following the retirement of Ash Barty.

The Sporting News takes a closer look at the Melbourne-born player ahead of the Australian Open.

Jaimee Fourlis age, rank and career highlights

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1999, Fourlis is currently 24 years old.

She made her professional debut in 2014 as a 14-year-old, featuring in an ITF Women's Circuit event in Glen Iris.

Three years later she made her first grand slam singles tournament appearance, granted entry into the 2017 Australian Open after winning a wildcard playoff.

Fourlis won her opening game against Anna Tatishvili before losing in the second round - her best performance at the tournament to date.

She also made her only French Open appearance to date that same year, bowing out in the first round.

Her next major milestone came in 2018, achieving a ranking within the WTA's top 200 in June.

Unfortunately, Fourlis' progress plateaued over the following two years, failing to qualify for any grand slam tournaments before undergoing shoulder surgery in 2020.

She returned to grand slam action in 2022, appearing in the Wimbledon and US Open singles draw.

Notably, she also reached the final of the Australian Open mixed doubles event alongside Jason "Koobz" Kubler.

Unfortunately, she fell one match short of entry into the 2023 French Open main draw.

Fourlis is ranked as the world No. 212 in singles and No. 390 in doubles (as of November 1, 2023).

Jaimee Fourlis playing style

Fourlis' strength is undoubtedly her powerful forehand, which she regularly uses to finish off points.

A right-hander, she also has a solid serve and reliable backhand.

Her definitive style tends to lead to her picking up straight-set wins, rather than extending to three sets.
