Aussie Jordan Thompson has booked his ticket to the second-round of the US Open after defeating Italy's Stefano Travaglia on Monday.

The 26-year-old from Sydney put together an impressive display to get through to the round of 64 at the US Open for the second-straight year, 6-3 6-4 4-6 6-2.

Currently ranked 63 in the world, Thompson came out firing taking the first two sets on the back of his big serve.

The Italian rallied to take the third but Thompson closed out the match 6-2 in the fourth.

The avid-Wests Tigers fan will now face Belarus' Egor Gerasimov in the second round.

Gerasimov upset 18th-seed Dusan Lajovic in the first-round, 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-4.

If Thompson can beat Gerasimov, it will be just the second time he has ever made it to the third round at a major after Roland Garros in 2019.

Thompson is the only Australian to book their ticket through to the second round of the US Open after day one action.

Marc Polmans put up a hard fight against Marcos Giron but eventually fell in five-sets, 6-4 6-7(5) 3-6 6-4 6-2.

The South African-born Aussie held a two sets to one lead before Giron fought back to take the final two sets.

Ajla Tomljanovic, the highest-ranked Aussie woman in the US Open draw, lost in straight sets to 17th-seed Angelique Kerber, 6-4 6-4.

Maddy Inglis lost in three-sets to Polish 24th-seed Magda Linette, 6-1 4-6 6-4.

Lizette Cabrera pushed Danka Kovinic before losing in three-sets, 6-4 3-6 6-2.

While late entrant into the tournament Arina Rodionova lost in straight sets to American Madison Brengle, 6-2 6-2.

Astra Sharma was the last Aussie to fall on day one, losing in a heart-breaking third-set tiebreak against 19th-seed Dayana Yastremska, 6-3 6-7 7-6.

Thompson is the third-highest ranked Aussie in the Men's draw at the US Open.

21st-seed Alex De Minaur will open his campaign tomorrow morning against Andrej Martin.

While John Millman has a tough first round encounter against Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili.

James Duckworth and Chris O'Connell will also be in action tomorrow.
