US Open 2019: Ashleigh Barty books fourth-round berth with straight-sets win image

Australian second seed Ashleigh Barty has progressed to the fourth round of the US Open with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Maria Sakkari of Greece.

Barty broke her opponent in the 11th game of a hard-fought first set and secured the match-winning break in the fifth game of the second set to safely move through to the final 16.

The world No.2 will play either Fiona Ferro or Wang Quang in the fourth round.

A mouth-watering quarter-final showdown with Serena Williams remains a possibility after the legendary American swept aside Karolina Muchova, 6-3 6-2, on Saturday morning (AEST).

Barty was the second Australian through to the fourth round on Saturday morning after Alex de Minaur upset world No.7 Kei Nishikori to progress to the second week of a grand slam for the first time in his fledgling career.
