The mercury was still rising on day three at Flushing Meadows and it did no favours for the Australian contingent, with Ash Barty the only player to rescue a disappointing display of results.

Barty was breezing through the first set before a delay forced by a mysterious noise swung momentum in Lucie Safarova's favour.

Static noise echoed through the stadium as officials attempted to pinpoint the cause, with members of the crowd forced to leave the stadium while the players blocked their ears.

After play resumed, Barty allowed Safarova back into the set as scores were locked at 5-5 until breaking her for a second time to claim the opening set 7-5.

It was back to business in the second set as Barty proved unstoppable on service, claiming a 7-5 6-3 to set up a third round meeting with the winner of Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Muchova.

Daria Gavrilova crashed out miserably in her second round match up against former world number one Victoria Azarenka after not dropping a single game in her first round triumph.

Azarenka was in cruise control from the beginning, overpowering Gavrilova in an impressive 6-1 6-2 victory.

After winning games at all four majors this year, the 25th seeded Australian failed to make it past the third round and into the second week at any slam.

“I’m pretty disappointed,” Gavrilova said.

“I just didn’t execute today.

“I was just making way too many errors with my forehand. My serving percentage was pretty poor too, so it puts me under a lot of pressure.”

Gavrilova refused to use the weather as an excuse but admitted the scorching conditions did make life difficult.

“It doesn’t help when you’re losing and it’s hot as well so you have to fight the heat and the opponent and your emotions because you’re not playing as well as you want to,” she said.

“So it gets a bit frustrating.”

The frustration continued for the Australians with Jason Kubler's horrid injury run continuing after being forced to retire against American Taylor Fritz with a rolled ankle.

The luckless 25-year-old went down late in the third set and could barely move or serve, calling it a day while trailing 6-3 3-6 6-3.

He bravely attempted to play on in the blistering heat after having his ankle strapped from the tour physio, immediately pulling out after two weak forehands that helped Fritz close out the set.

After a 10-minute heat break, Kubler battled through another two points in the fourth set before conceding defeat.

The heartbreaking loss ends a dream major run after six knee surgeries in eight years.
