Australia will have at least one less player to cheer for at this year's Australian Open after Thanasi Kokkinakis announced he was withdrawing.

The 23-year-old world number 199 was no guarantee to be in the main draw and would have had to receive a wildcard or go through qualifying.

Though now he won't be there in any capacity, taking to Twitter to inform his followers.

"Unfortunately I’ve got some health concerns I need to take care of and will have to miss the Australian Open and Aussie summer," Kokkinakis wrote.

"Shattered to miss my favourite part of the year but I have to look after myself first. Always appreciate the continued support."

Kokkinakis didn't expand on what the issue was, though the news comes on the back of yet another tough year for the South Australian.

A persistent pectoral injury plagued his season, sidelining him for several months and forcing further withdrawals.

Having qualifying for the Australian Open main draw in 2019, he retired midway through the second set of his first-round meeting with Japan's Taro Daniel.

After just one tournament in the next six months, Kokkinakis won his first match at a major in four years when defeating Belarus' Ilya Ivashka at the US Open.

He then had to pull out of his blockbuster second-round match with Rafael Nadal.

Kokkinakis hasn't played since losing a Challenger tournament final in California back in September.
