Nadal will next face American Jack Sock for a place in the quarterfinals. Sock eliminated Borna Coric in straight sets.
Nadal is seeded sixth and came into the year's second grand slam tournament having won one clay-court title in 2015 and slipping to No. 7 in the world. However, Nadal believes he is getting back to his best.
"I think the last couple of weeks I have been playing totally better," Nadel said on-court after the match. "Every match is another story for me.
"Things are going better, today another good match, very positive feelings and being in fourth round is great news for me."
