It was a mixed day across the courts for Australian tennis stars.

With the 2018 season winding down, the world's top-ranked players are keeping an eye on the year-end ATP and WTA Finals.

However, there are still opportunities for players to boost their rankings to gain a seeding for next year's Australian Open.

KYRGIOS, GAVRILOVA THROUGH IN MOSCOW

Nick Kyrgios needed an hour and 29 minutes to take down local hope Andrey Rublev at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

The 6-3 4-6 6-4 win over Rublev set Kyrgios up to play Bosnia's Mirza Basic in the second round.

It was a postive return to form for Kyrgios, who was criticised after a meek performance at last week's Shanghai Masters led to questions over his effort - or lack thereof - in matches that aren't going his way.

Kyrgios - who has slipped to number 37 in the world rankings - engaged in a row with the chair umpire in Shanghai as American Bradley Klahn completed the upset result.

However, Kyrgios put those questions to bed with the gritty win over Rublev - which was highlighted by some absurd returns.

The winner of the Kyrgios-Basic match will face either Lukas Rosol or Karen Khachanov in the quarters.

In the women's draw, Daria Gavrilova took down another local hope in lucky loser Vitalia Diatchenko.

Gavrilova may have won in straight sets, but Diatchenko pushed the No.32-ranked Australian all the way as Gavrilova sealed a 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 victory.

The Aussie will take on Johanna Konta in the second round after the Briton defeated No.7-ranked Belgian Elise Mertens in straight sets.

The winner of the Gavrilova-Konta match will face either Kiki Bertens or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the quarters.

MILLMAN WINS IN STOCKHOLM; DE MINAUR, EBDEN OUT

At the Stockholm Open, Federer-conqueror John Millman battled from a set down to defeat fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin in the first round.

After losing the first set 4-6 to the 19-year-old qualifier, Millman cruised to a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory.

Millman will play Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

However, Alex de Minaur and Matt Ebden were both eliminated in Stockholm.

De Minaur - who reached the Shanghai third round before losing to Alexander Zverev - was taken to two tiebreakers with Philipp Kohlschreiber, before the German veteran waltzed through the decider to claim a 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (2-7) 6-1 victory.

Ebden - a quarter-finalist in Shanghai last week - was ousted by Spanish eighth seed Fernando Verdasco, who cruised to a 6-4 6-2 win.
